I had a song to sing but you threw it in a fire. I had a song to sing but you put it in a hole. Enter the grieving friends, enter the mother. Enter everything you've left behind.
I had a gift to bring but it fell into collection. None of the payments made; the bank took it while I slept. Enter the empty plans and too much discretion. Enter the empty hands you left behind.
I had a song to sing but I held it to a candle. I had a song to sing but I put it in a hole. Exit the grieving friends, exit the father. Exit everything you've left behind.

Like A Cat
02:40

Like a Cat
If I could collect all the things I’ve said
I’d put all the words back inside my head
I’ve long fallen over you
I’m still falling over you
Tomorrow I’m falling too
Until I am dead
As sure as the field cannot be the sea
It’s hard loving you when I’m stuck as me
I do all the wrong things first
I do all the best things worst
When others are blessed I’m cursed
Autumn leaves hit the ground
Love is a word I find hard to know
And still think of love everywhere I go
Under blankets of endless rain
Rain is cold but I feel no pain
Ever sure of my sure refrain
Never letting you go
And if you keep me around
I’ll be sure like a cat to fall
Feet on the ground

I Know A Place
02:42
|
|

I Know a Place
I know a place where your face is preserved in amber. I know a time where the clock hand is seized; where we can forget all the things we don’t want to remember. Forget what is real, you can meet me in dreams.
I’m not as mean as I seem in the details of daylight. The words that I say marching back to my mouth. Half of my actions collapse if you choose to refuse them. The facts of the rest are arrested in doubt.
I know a place where the leaves are unfurling forever, where you take my hand anytime that you please. Your brow is unfurrowed and ties to the present are severed. Forget what you should do and meet me in dreams.
So turn off your phone, quit your job, set the mattress on fire. Boil the Bible to make yourself tea. Only your memories stand to confirm you’re a liar. There’s no knock at the door and it’s probably me.

This Ark
02:31
|
|
||
If the rock is burning, I cool it down with you. If the river is rising, I rise above it with you. This ark will see me through. This ark will see me through.
Sing with me, baby. Yes, sing and make no sound. Harvest verses and pull them from the ground. We'll lose this wicked town, take the very smell of it and wash it from your gown.
When we make our entrance our people will come out with cord wood angels to place upon our route. Relinquish any doubt: as the moon eclipses me the haves will go without.

Every Moment
03:17

I used to measure out the air
Check the direction of the wind
Check the color of the leaves on trees
To know which month I’m in
Set my watch at every high tide
So I’d know when to begin
Set the table with the sun at noon
Sharpen blade and lead the lamb in
But I’m not waiting anymore
I’m not waiting anymore
I’m not waiting anymore
I’m not waiting anymore
There’s no points that you can tally
And we are not keeping score
I’m not waiting anymore.
I used to measure out the land
Counting steps from here to there
Used to fatten up the lamb
Harvest fields till they were bare
Used to pull the nets across the bay
To see what I could find
Pull it shining from the water
Pull it shining from the brine
But I’m not waiting anymore
I’m not waiting anymore
Set that hook and dip the oar
I’m not waiting anymore
Every moment is the dawn
And I drink it from my hands
I’m not waiting anymore.

Now She's Gone
02:08
|
|
||
Now she's gone. I know she ain't coming back this time. She's gone. I know she ain't coming back again.
Not like the time before when a call was all that was needed. With memory a curse, I've only ended up feeling cheated. Now the river runs slow and heavy, like lead, with the salt of the blood and tears we've shed. I'd have preferred an ugly ending over hunger.
Not like the time before, when I prayed she'd leave me alone. I'm checking the mail and I fell myself chained by the phone. Now I'm down at the pier and it's falling apart, but I can't stay home. I feel in my heart that I'll find her in a refuge of the dead.

Divisionary
03:49
|
|
||
I am several people and you are several people, and several of our people fail to get along. They wear the right disguises. They speak common languages, but sometimes they mistake the face for whom might wear the mask. You are several people, and of those several people, some of them I tolerate and some I cannot stand. I recognize your face but sadly, your true name escapes me. Time slips through our fingers and we leave with empty hands. I am several people and several of those people-- if I could, I would divorce their actions from my name. When the glass is shattered and replaced into the mirror we are like the images reflected in the panes. I am several people, and of those several people, love as many of them as your stomach can withstand. You are several people, and of those several people, have the kindest of them extend a willing hand.
Sing on high, a voice that can accompany yourself.

Jezebel
03:25
|
|
||
Jezebel wasn't born with a silver spoon in her mouth
She probably had less than every one of us
But when she knew how to walk she knew
How to bring the house down
Can't blame her for her beauty
She wins with her hands down
Jezebel, what a belle
Looks like a princess in her new dress
How did you get that?
Do you really want to know she said
It would seem she's on her way
It's more, more than just a dream
She put on her stockings and shoes
Had nothing to lose, she said it was worth it
Reach for the top
And the sun is gonna shine
Every winter was a war she said
I want to get what's mine
Jezebel, Jezebel
Won't try to deny where she came from
You can see it in her pride
And the raven in her eyes
Try show her a better way
She'll say you don't know what you've been missing
And by the time she blinks you know she won't be listening
Reach for the top she said
And the sun is gonna shine
Every winter was a war she said
I want to get what's mine

Pestilence
03:08
|
|
||
It isn't safe to walk these streets. The stranger's greeting: poison. From victory we wring defeat. Weave chaos out of reason. And one and one's eleven now, and tea leaves serve as gospel. Entitlement the sacred cow of natives turning hostile.
We're tailor-made to fill the grave, clear calendars tomorrow. Waving signs with misspelled lines. From ear to ear gone hollow. The virus ironing its shirt. Essential in employment. The virus greets the sunny dawn and wonders where the fear went.
The pestilence has two eyes. They watch you from the mirror. The condensation clouds your view or else it would be clearer.
